The Arc of Hysteria

Configuration #2, Spheres, various sizes, metal wire, digital print on Linoleum, 200 × 133 cm, 2025

On the question “Why am I the person that you tell me to be?” and other emancipatory doubts against the yoke of the non-self.

In "The Arc of Hysteria", Egemen Demirci explores historical images of the body and the extent to which our identity is shaped by external gazes. The starting point is a medical drawing of an arched back, used in the 19th century to diagnose "hysteria”.

Two copper spheres rest on or hover above this drawing. Inscribed on them are the words Vantage and Vanish, marking the tension between visibility and erasure, between being seen and disappearing under imposed definitions.
