Abend

Configuration #2, Photochromic paint, Two billboards, 120 × 420 cm each, Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, Germany, 2025

A text that reads “was kommt nach der Vernunft” (what comes after reason) written in photochromic paint. The paint changes color from white to purple, pink and blue and becomes visible during the day when there is sun or daylight. In the lack of sun or daylight the paint turns back to white and the text becomes invisible.

What do different forms of display mean for textual works and messages – whether within the museum, on billboards, or in public space?

Demirci pushes this inquiry further and positions works in such a way that they evade immediate visibility – only revealing themselves under specific conditions. One public message, “What comes after reason”, is only legible when sunlight hits the surface at just the right angle. Visibility becomes a matter of timing, location and disposition.
